Question from Lee Junseok:
Why wombats sleep on their backs?
Just that position fits in their
burrows?
Is there another reason why
wombats sleep on their backs?

The Wombat Answers:
The wombat's burrow is not that spacious, but a wombat has an ample enough space for it to move around in it's burrow. There are actually 2 wombat sleeping position. The curled up position and the laying on it's back position. Like us (humans), when we are relaxed and ready to sleep, the usual sleeping position that we position ourselves to, is either laying on our back or on our side.
When a wombat sleeps on it's back, it means that they're relaxed and ready to get into deep sleep.
If a wombat feels a need to control their body temperature usually by keeping themselves warm, they use the curled up position. The curled up position is similar to hugging or covering oneself with a blanket. And is effective in keeping the wombat warm. Specially during rainy season and winter.
I hope this answer satisfied your curiosity.
